Corner Store 24 at Tamborine Mountain has done something no other store in Queensland has done — it removed the checkout operator, the trading hours and the roster, and left the shopping experience intact. GaP Solutions helped build it.
Ask anyone who lives on a mountain what happens when you run out of milk at 9pm. You drive down the range, or you go without.
That was the problem worth solving at Tamborine Mountain. The answer wasn't a bigger supermarket or a longer roster — it was a store that simply never closes and never needs to be staffed. Corner Store 24 opened as the first fully unmanned, 24-hour retail store of its kind in Queensland, and it has been trading around the clock ever since.
GaP Solutions was part of the project team that made it work — the point-of-sale and self-checkout technology, the back-of-house systems that keep a store running when nobody is standing in it, and the Corner Store 24 app itself, developed in-house by GaP Solutions, which is what turns a phone into a front door key.
How an unmanned store actually works
The concept is simple to describe and unforgiving to execute. There is no one at the door, so the door has to know who you are. There is no one at the register, so the register has to be something a shopper can drive themselves. And there is no one on the floor, so the store has to be readable at a glance.
Three systems carry the whole model:
1. A phone as the front door key
Entry is by membership. Shoppers register once in the Corner Store 24 app, verify their identity by SMS, and from then on the app is their digital access pass — scan the QR code at the entry or unlock the automated door straight from the phone, day or night. Because every entry is tied to a verified member, the store is never anonymous, which is precisely what makes unattended trading viable.
The app carries the rest of the relationship too: loyalty points accrue automatically, active receipts and full purchase history live in the account, and the rewards card can be added to Apple Wallet so it's there without opening anything. Profile, balance and account settings are all self-service — because there is no service desk to walk up to.
2. Self-checkout that a first-timer can use
Two self-service terminals sit under bright "Please Pay Here" screens on the way out, each with an integrated scanner, scale and card terminal. Loose produce is weighed and selected on-screen by category, printed receipts are available, and card payment is the only tender — no cash to reconcile, no float, no safe.
3. Merchandising that answers questions for you
Without a staff member to ask, the fit-out has to do the explaining. Chalkboard signage prices produce by the kilo, overhead category boards label Dairy, Meat, Frozen and Drinks, and electronic shelf labels keep pricing accurate across the range without anyone walking the aisle with a label gun.

The easy version of an unmanned store is a wall of packaged snacks. Corner Store 24 deliberately went further, because a store that can't finish a weeknight dinner isn't solving the problem it set out to solve.
- Fresh produce — loose onions, garlic, potatoes, apples, mandarins, avocados and sweet potato, priced per kilo and weighed at the terminal.
- Chilled and dairy — milk, yoghurt, butter, cheese and packaged smallgoods across a full fridge line.
- Meat and frozen — dedicated cabinets so a full meal is possible, not just a snack.
- Pantry and dry goods — cereal, dried fruit, pasta, sauces and staples.
- Ready-to-eat and drinks — salads, wraps, sandwiches, juices, soft drinks, water and coffee.
- Reusable bags at the terminal, in place of a checkout operator handing them over.

What this means for independent retailers
Tamborine Mountain is the proof, not the point. The same model answers a set of problems independent retailers across Australia are already living with:
- Trading hours without wage hours. Overnight and public-holiday trade becomes possible without penalty rates or a roster to fill.
- Staff shortages stop being a ceiling. In regional towns where hiring is the hard part, the store isn't limited by who's available.
- Small footprints become viable. A site too small to justify a staffed roster can still carry a genuine grocery range.
- Cashless removes a whole risk category. No till, no float, no cash handling, no banking run.
